Hellooooooo everybody!
Great week being a missionary! Last Tuesday was good, Tuesday night we ended up just walking around late at night. We ended up at a skate park and talked to a lot of people that were cool. As we were leaving we saw this guy in front of his house in the dark and we went and talked to him and apparently scared him to death. He was super cool and talked with him until the end of the night basically. He grew up in Riverton and he proceeded to tell us how sketchy he thinks this town is and what parts to stay away from and that he thought we were going to do something to him when we first started walking up to him. It's a huge blessing to have the Lord on your side and the Spirit to guide you and protect you as a missionary. Honestly never felt afraid walking down the street!
Wednesday we were led to a pretty cool guy named Andy. We knocked on his door but nobody answered, but later were coming down the street on the other side and he was sitting on his porch. Could've assumed he wasn't interested because he didn't answer the door, BUT we yelled at him across the street and went over and started talking to him. Ended up talking to him for a while, taught him a little, and he mentioned that we he saw us across the street he was hoping we would come over. Crazy to think we could've missed that opportunity if we didn't have the courage to listen to the prompting to yell at him across the street.
Friday night we had an amazing lesson!! This woman wasn't really understanding how the book of mormon could help her. She said it was just stories to her and she didn't really understand how to apply it to her life. So we read with her (different than what we planned to do) and read Alma 32. We stopped and talked a lot and by the end she was figuring things out and applying it to her life it was AMAZING. Then she started asking like what she would have to do if she wants to become a member, and how she would have to change her life....those are good questions to ask!
Sunday we saw miracles. Saturday night we spent a lot of time texting people and inviting people to church. Then Sunday morning we woke up early and left early so we could go knock on people's doors. We drove all around town and had no success with the people we went to go see/try to wake up. We got to church and parked the car and said a prayer together pleading with the Lord to somehow help us get someone to church. We've really been struggling with that here recently. 5 minutes after church started a lady named Marie walked in. We've been teaching her for MONTHS and have been trying SO HARD to get her to church! She walked right in and sat next to a lady that has become her friend. Her coming wasn't a direct result of our efforts, but I know we tried our absolute hardest, and did everything we could....then went to the Lord and gave the rest to Him. I know that is how God answers prayers. THEN later another miracle. We had 4 appointments in the evening and none of them worked out. So we were stuck with nothing to do, we had already talked to more than 20 people that day so didn't feel like we needed to do more finding. Elder Buchanan mentioned the name of one lady we've been trying to work with. I immediately put the car into drive and started driving to her house, I felt so good about it. We showed up and she came to the door. She told us now wasn't a good time, her grandmother passed away the night before. But then she started crying and telling us to come in because she needed to talk. We couldn't go in because there was no male in the home, but we quickly set up for some friends of hers (that are members in our ward) to meet us at the church building. She opened up to us and truly has just been struggling. She mentioned hoe she was crying desperately trying to get her mother who lives with her to go upstairs so she could talk to someone, then we knocked. I know Heavenly Father was looking out for her. Then as she was crying telling us all her struggles, we were able to testify to her of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. And that truly is one of the biggest reasons I came out on my mission. The Atonement is real, and Christ has suffered for each of us. So we don't have to suffer alone and so there is hope. I am so grateful I have the opportunity to teach people that they aren't alone, that there is hope, and that Christ knows how they feel.
Spiritual thought: In church this guy who we've been taking out to lessons with us, who's going to Arizona on his mission in 10 days, got up a shared a really cool scriptures. Mosiah 20:11 "11 And it came to pass that the people of Limhi began to drive the Lamanites before them; yet they were not half so numerous as the Lamanites. But they fought for their lives, and for their wives, and for their children; therefore they exerted themselves and like dragons did they fight." There is opposition in all things. I have seen that in my mission and I've seen that in my own life. There is an opposing force that's was us to be miserable. Sometimes we have to fight back like DRAGONS, exerting ourselves as much as we can. And quite literally we're fighting for our lives, our eternal lives. And adding the "for their wives, and for their children" makes it even cooler. Its not all about me. Who I am, and who I become affects my future wife and children. I need to be worthy and good enough for them. I know that life is hard and there is an opposition, but with the Lord on our side and as we rely upon our Savior Jesus Christ and try our hardest, we can overcome the opposition. And when we beat the darkness, the light pours into our lives, I've seen it happen and I KNOW it's worth it.
Fun stuff:
-we met this guy on the street, I think he was a little drunk, but he yelled at us and asked if we were mormon missionaries. We went up to talk to him and he was mumbling saying stuff about "Corn and Vodka" then he said he just talked to Corn and Vodka and they gave him a Bible. FINALLY it clicked....he had just met the sisters in Riverton, Sister Kern and Sister Fungavaka!!! (if you read this far you understand the subject)
-I ate a sliver of 9 million Scoville units spicy chocolate a while ago. But we were back and the chocolate was out again (so we could bring some for our district to try). But somehow I ended up eating a whole square....it was a terrible experience. My ears started hurting, and I couldn't think, and there was no relief.
-I ran out of candy this week
Pictures:
-a lady in the ward found out is was my birthday a couple weeks ago so she made me a cake when she quickly for our dinner Friday
