7 January 2020 - 2,020 Sodas

Hola

Good week in Longmont!

Last Tuesday was new years eve as yall know, so because of that our mission president had us in at 6pm. Luckily we live in the same apartment complex as another set of Elders, so we had a party. And by party I mean we drank tons of soda and played Settlers of Catan.

Wednesday was a good day. We had a meeting with our zone and talked about some important stuff. But the end of the meeting it turned into a conversation about strengths, weaknesses, and how the Atonement can help us improve our strengths and overcome our weaknesses. It was pretty cool. I thought about it, there were about 24 people, 18-22 years old. Honestly we're just kids. And there's lots of meetings that happen in the world, and LOTS in the church. But that meeting happened with all these young random people from all over, was super important. The president of the church has said this the gathering is the most important thing taking place on the earth today. And that small meeting being ran by a couple of kids, was powerful and important to the Lord. Pretty cool. After that we had a good day. We went out and knocked on some doors in the dark. One guy started talking to us on his doorstep and because it was so cold eventually let us in. The cold is our ally.

Thursday we had a really cool experience. There is this old couple that hasn't been to church in a while because one has been sick and only able to be in bed and a chair in his living room for months. We were told to stop by and check up on them, so we did with the time we had. We went by and they immediately let us in. Talked with him and his wife for a little bit then had to go. Before we left she asked us if we could give her husband a blessing, because he had woken up that day a little sicker than usual. We did and immediately following that Priesthood blessing Elder Brimley was prompted to ask her if she would like one as well. She immediately said yes and it was powerful. They thanked us, and the man with tears in his eyes told us that he felt a lot of comfort in his blessing. I assured him, again as I've been saying, we're just kids. But we are servants of Jesus Christ and he sent us to them....I told them that Heavenly Father is definitely aware of him and her. This is real. God is there and he cares. Priesthood power is real. And we're more than just two boys going out doing something foolish. We are led by the Lord.

Friday was fun. There is an elder that's sick in the zone, but his companion needed some time to go out and work. So we did a mini exchange and Elder Brimley stayed with the sick elder and I took elder Teter up to Lyons. We knocked some doors in this small town and had a good time. Lots of friendly people. There was actually a flood that happened back in 2013 and apparently lots of members helped, so many people are very friendly towards us. Just being Christlike goes a long way when it comes to missionary work.

Saturday we took a trip out to this neighborhood in the middle of Longmont and Boulder. We could actually see Boulder across the lake, it was kinda crazy. But spent some time in this neighborhood, we were planning on knocking some doors while we were there but....they were castles. Never had to walk up 4 flights of stairs to get to the front door before. Decided we would probably have success somewhere else. But we were able to contact some people that we had records of out there. Had a good time. I used a giant lion knocker which was awesome. Later that day we went out to visit someone we are teaching with our elders quorum president and his daughter. Lesson ended up falling through, as they do, but we decided to go out and visit some more people nearby. Ended up seeing some people who definitely needed us. Cool how things work out when you're willing to serve, the Lord gives you an errand.

Sunday was good, full of meetings. We got back from church and immediately got a call from some sisters. They had a guy randomly walk into the church building and he lived in our ward boundaries so they called us over. Turns out he is a member and was baptized when he was 8 but hasn't been to Church in years. He just woke up early that morning and decided to go to church. So we ended up going into a room and teaching him exactly what he needed to hear. Kinda strange because we taught with two sisters, BUT it was cool. We're going to help him get back, I'm so excited. He also told us he likes basketball and works at Buffalo wild wings, two things we participate in often. Had dinner that night with the stake President which was fun!

Yesterday was FREEZING. For some reason it was super windy, like Wyoming windy. And for some reason we decided to spend lots of time outside walking around. It was painful but fun. We had a lesson around 4 with this couple we met a while back. We stopped by on Sunday night and the boyfriend said that his girlfriend was at work....although we are pretty sure saw her inside. But we set up the return appointment and were there on time. Both of us were a little worried they wouldn't be there, BUT we showed up as they were walking out to go to the park. Kinda awkward, but we stopped them and they told us they forgot. Somehow, and I don't know how, we convinced them to walk back to their apartment and listen to us for 15 minutes. Actually I do know how. The spirit of the lord touched their hearts, I know they were having this internal struggle of deciding to listen to us. Luckily they are ready and we're willing to listen to the spirit. We went in and talked with them and it was awesome! Made my day.

Fun stuff:
-we were randomly walking one night and messing around. Ended up grabbing a giant plant and hitting elder Brimley with it which led to him grabbing it out of my hand. It was all fun and games.....until a few minutes later my hand in my pocket felt wet. Super weird, must've gotten something on it from the plant. Pulled out my hand and it was COVERED IN BLOOD. But don't worry, we made it home and the slice on my finger is all super glued up...kinda crazy though
-we found a little blue ball while walking a trail. Ended up kicking it all the way to a neighborhood and near a house we were stopping by. There was one drain nearby...I kicked the ball and it rolled and we saw it going towards the sewer. Elder Brimley ran for it...but it was too late. Our ball was gone.
-we drank too much soda on new years eve. So we went to bed at 10:30 like we are supposed to....but because of upset stomachs and needing to go to the bathroom so much we ended up being awake at midnight haha.

Spiritual thought: There is a talk by Jeffrey R Holland that I love, and lots of people love, called "Lord, I believe". I read that recently and my mind has been on faith/belief/knowledge. Doctrine Covenants 6:36 counsels us to "doubt not, fear not". And Mark 5:36 the Master counsels us to "be not afraid, only believe". It is okay to not KNOW some things. But it is not okay to be afraid or do doubt, we are commanded not to. Growing up there are many things I believed in, and still believe in and don't KNOW. I have always believed the book of mormon was true, I've always believed Jesus Christ was my Savior. But those two things that used to be a belief, are now a knowledge. It is okay not to know but do not doubt and do not fear. Trust what you do know and do have faith in and I promise eventually that belief can turn into a knowledge. Seek truth, respond to questions (and as Elder Holland has counseled us, "in matters of faith and conviction, it helps to direct your inquiry toward those who actually have some), but don't be afraid and don't doubt...that is dangerous. Faith, belief, and knowledge are all connected in an interesting way.
