18 February 2020 - WAZ GOOD

Hey my friends

"Elder Hughes, what should the subject of my email be?"-Elder Milius
"say...waz gooood"-Elder Hughes

Last Tuesday we went to the temple. Had a good time, felt spiritually fed. Taught a few lessons that night to recent converts, it was a successful day.

Monday I spent the day in another area with my district leader Elder Leonhardt! Had a good time had a cool miracle going to contact someone and we were successful in contacting them. BUT they just said they were busy and closed the door. Luckily we hung out there for a while and knocked on the neighbors and actually found someone who was interested on the first door that opened up to us. Later that night we were having a lesson with some members. Focused on missionary work but the lesson quickly changed as they mentioned how they've had 2 children pass away, one very recently. It was a powerful conversation on the Atonement, plan of salvation, and loss of loved ones.

Wednesday we had a cool lesson with a teenager we've been meeting with. He wanted to shoot some hoops with us before we started the lesson which was kinda awkward because we only had 3p minutes before out next appointment. Luckily we were blessed and the gym was full of tons of old ladies making quilts. So we went to the relief society room and drew out "God's playbook" on the board. The Lord was with us. Went straight from that to another powerful lesson. Had an opportunity to promise some pretty amazing blessings at the end about reading the book of mormon and repentance.

Had an exchange on Friday with Elder Huntsman! I was his companion for a transfer and it was nice to be with him again. Had a cool experience that night. Went to visit some members and they weren't there BUT their neighbors were home. We knocked and turns out this guy grew up in the Church and one thing led to another and we had dinner planned with him for Saturday night. The dinner went really well talked about the Restoration and the plan of salvation with him and his wife the whole time. Left with a powerful scripture from the Book of mormon, I pray it touched their hearts somehow and they open up the book we left them. We'll see them again!

Monday I was on an exchange with Elder Quinton. Pretty cold day, but we it good! Met a super kind lady, BUT she was running out. So we stopped by her neighbor who was a member and talked with them. Turns out this lady is basically a member but loves wine too much. Had a super cool lesson out of the blue with this family, and tslked about following the spirit. Ended the night teaching a lesson about the gospel of Jesus Christ. Had a really good conversation about what we need to do to more fully apply the Atonement of Christ.

Fun stuff:
-Our mini van is being borrowed right now by some sisters, so we're borrowing the "Transfer van". It's a giant Chevy Express? I think. Anyway it's a good time... In the words of sister Palmer "it's like driving a bounce house"
-we were at a Mexican restaurant yesterday (honestly some of the best Mexican food I've had on my mission). Last time elder Hughes was there the server made him eat a giant pepper and apparently it was pretty bad. So this time elder Hughes and the server encouraged me to eat it. Ive eaten some spicy things, the worlds spociesr chocolate being some of the worst. So I didn't think this pepper, although huge and intimidating, couldn't be bad at all. Honestly I thought elder Hughes was just a wimp. So I ate the ENTIRE thing. Even went in for a second bite to make sure I got every bit of it. I cannot express the pain felt inside of my mouth. I didn't know what to do. The lady serving us got me another cup of water and I knocked it over and spilled water across the whole table....but I picked up the ice to cool my mouth down....it was bad... But then I got over it and acted like it was nothing.

Spiritual thought:
In Alma chapter 8 Alma has a pretty rough experience. He goes to Ammonihah and has a pretty rough time. He gets reviled, spit upon, and kicked out of the city. As he was leaving, he was bummed (as anyone would be). We've been there, hanging out heads low, in a slump because of the circumstances we're in. And honestly Alma here has better reason than I usually do to be sorrowful. BUT in verse 15 an angel comes and tells him to "lift up [his] head and rejoice". Interesting. Despite all the bad that just happened and all reasons Alma has to be sad, the angel tells him to forget about it and be happy. There is always reason to rejoice. The fact that you're living and breathing is a reason to rejoice. Truly despite any circumstance, focus on it and you can find joy. Sometimes it's harder than others, and sometimes it takes an ANGEL to remind us. But it's there, look for it and you will find it. Lift up your head and be happy :).

Love you all!
